No RCV Ban for Presidential Primaries

In June, the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) added language to the 2028 delegate selection rules that effectively bans state parties from using Ranked Choice Voting in their own presidential nominating processes. Twelve state parties have used ranked choice voting somewhere in that process over the last two cycles, and not one of them was invited to present before the vote.

This isn’t about whether you love RCV. It’s about whether the national party should strip states of a tool that’s working for them  -a tool that more than doubled primary turnout in Wyoming and nearly quadrupled it in Kansas- at the same time that banning RCV sits on the Heritage Foundation’s priority list and inside Project 2025. Democrats should not be doing Republicans’ work for them.

There’s one chance to fix it: a vote of the full DNC membership in Austin this August. The fix is simple: strike the ban language and return the rules to what they’ve always been, with every state deciding for itself. No one would be required to use ranked choice voting; states would simply keep the right to choose.

Here’s how you can help

  1. Contact any DNC members you know and ask them to support removing the ban. Use this link to contact them in two easy steps
  2. Join the National Call on Tuesday, July 28 at 8:30 PM ET / 7:30 PM CT, where state party leaders who’ve actually run these elections share what’s at stake.
  3. Sign the petition below!

More information and details about the proposed change can be found here.

We, the undersigned, urge all of our respective DNC representatives to OPPOSE Rule 14 of the Delegate Selection Plan.

Whether or not our DNC representatives personally support RCV, this is about whether the national party should strip states of a tool that’s working for them.

Please don’t ban RCV. It is obviously the best path forward to get politics moving again, where politians have to collaborate and get the strangle hold of money and corporations out of our politics

Ranked Choice Voting is the most fair way to vote and to allow for all candidates to have a chance to win. The DNC is becoming indistinguishable from the RNC by disallowing RCV. Let US, the voters, decide how and for whom we vote.

RCV insures that a majority of state voters approve of their representative. We are proud of our state standards. The Heritage Foundation wants RCV eliminated, why do you want to help them? The current top down choices have not been working. This sounds like another “this is why we lose move”. ”

The DNC should vote to allow the use of ranked choice voting for presidential primaries in any state that wants to use it – and not just for the first round, which would negate the purpose of RCV. There is no good reason not to use RCV. More democracy – not less, please!
