Statement on the Republican Redistricting Bill

Texas Progressive Caucus
August 02, 2025

The Texas Progressive Caucus condemns in the strongest possible terms the party-line passage of the Republican congressional redistricting bill in the House Redistricting Committee. This bill is a blatant and calculated attack on Black, Latino, and other communities of color across Texas—communities whose political power Republicans are actively working to suppress through racial gerrymandering and a deeply dishonest process.

As Vice Chair of the Redistricting Committee Rep. Jon Rosenthal stated:

"This body has been complicit in complying with the order of the president to deliver five new seats... This is a racist attack on Black and brown communities, and I won't stand for it. We will continue to fight this with everything we have."

We stand with Rep. Rosenthal and all those speaking out against this injustice. The words of Speaker Pro Tempore Joe Moody laid bare the moral cost of this plan:

"At the dawn of America, a Black person was counted as three-fifths of a person. The effect of these maps is that now, a Black person's vote is worth only one-fifth. I guess I should feel lucky, because people who look like me are worth at least one third. We are truly doing worse in Austin today than in 1787 Philadelphia."

As Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Gene Wu warned:

"In my 13 years here, I have not seen a process like this, hiding the ball not only from the public, but from members themselves. This action does not move us forward. It takes us very far back."

This isn’t just a partisan map—it’s a map soaked in racial injustice. It silences communities, dismantles representation, and mocks the very foundation of our democracy. If allowed to pass, it will define Texas for the next decade in the image of a shrinking minority clinging to power through discrimination and deceit.

We call on our fellow House Democrats: Do not give this process the legitimacy of a quorum. Walk out. Break quorum. Do not dignify this racist gerrymander with your presence. We elected you to fight – and when necessary, to resist. Right now, we need you to act boldly. If there was ever a time to do just that, it is now.

The Texas Progressive Caucus stands with every Texan whose voice and vote is being silenced. We will not yield. We will fight this in the courts, in the streets, and at the ballot box. The map may be rigged, but the people are rising. This fight is far from over.
