No RCV Ban for Presidential Primaries

In June, the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) added language to the 2028 delegate selection rules that effectively bans state parties from using Ranked Choice Voting in their own presidential nominating processes. Twelve state parties have used ranked choice voting somewhere in that process over the last two cycles, and not one of them was invited to present before the vote.

This isn’t about whether you love RCV. It’s about whether the national party should strip states of a tool that’s working for them  -a tool that more than doubled primary turnout in Wyoming and nearly quadrupled it in Kansas- at the same time that banning RCV sits on the Heritage Foundation’s priority list and inside Project 2025. Democrats should not be doing Republicans’ work for them.

There’s one chance to fix it: a vote of the full DNC membership in Austin this August. The fix is simple: strike the ban language and return the rules to what they’ve always been, with every state deciding for itself. No one would be required to use ranked choice voting; states would simply keep the right to choose.

Here’s how you can help

  1. Contact any DNC members you know and ask them to support removing the ban. Use this link to contact them in two easy steps!
  2. Join the National Call on Tuesday, July 28 at 8:30 PM ET / 7:30 PM CT, where state party leaders who’ve actually run these elections share what’s at stake.
  3. Sign the petition below!

More information and details about the proposed change can be found here.

We, the undersigned, urge all of our respective DNC representatives to OPPOSE Rule 14 of the Delegate Selection Plan.

Whether or not our DNC representatives personally support RCV, this is about whether the national party should strip states of a tool that’s working for them.

Ranked Choice Voting should not be disallowed in primaries. It results in candidates chosen for broad support and is an advantageous way of voting.

Absolutely opposed to banning RCV—in fact, I hope to see it required in all elections. It’s far superior, more representative of voters’ views, and more conductive to cooperative politics than the traditional first-past-the-gate method.

RCV is one of the key election reform strategies to achieve a more representative democracy of the type of candidate WE the PEOPLE want to elect

Absolutely no reason for the DNC, the establishment supposedly in favour of free and fair elections and campaign reform, to be banning RCV.

Ranked choice voting is one of the best ideas to come along in our democracy in a long time. Please don’t restrict it!

I can’t think of a more effective way to turn off anyone who supports a more open and accessible political system. Of course if you prefer an oligarch owned and operated party it makes a lot of sense.
