No RCV Ban for Presidential Primaries

In June, the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) added language to the 2028 delegate selection rules that effectively bans state parties from using Ranked Choice Voting in their own presidential nominating processes. Twelve state parties have used ranked choice voting somewhere in that process over the last two cycles, and not one of them was invited to present before the vote.

This isn’t about whether you love RCV. It’s about whether the national party should strip states of a tool that’s working for them  -a tool that more than doubled primary turnout in Wyoming and nearly quadrupled it in Kansas- at the same time that banning RCV sits on the Heritage Foundation’s priority list and inside Project 2025. Democrats should not be doing Republicans’ work for them.

There’s one chance to fix it: a vote of the full DNC membership in Austin this August. The fix is simple: strike the ban language and return the rules to what they’ve always been, with every state deciding for itself. No one would be required to use ranked choice voting; states would simply keep the right to choose.

Here’s how you can help: contact any DNC members you know and ask them to support removing the ban, join the National Call on Tuesday, July 28, and sign the petition below!

More information and details about the proposed change can be found here.

We, the undersigned, urge all of our respective DNC representatives to OPPOSE Rule 14 of the Delegate Selection Plan.

Whether or not our DNC representatives personally support RCV, this is about whether the national party should strip states of a tool that’s working for them.

Voters want more than the polarization that currently exists and a ranked ballot system increases voters choice. Anyone who opposed to it has ulterior motives that may be beneficent but are not representative of peoples wishes and are an objective mistake.

I voted early in the Missouri primary in 2020 for Pete Buttigieg, but he dropped out after I already had voted! My vote was essentially wasted. I could not vote in person on election day because I was studying abroad for college. Please allow and endorse ranked-choice voting in the primaries so all of our voices count, even if our candidates drop out!

RCV is a well-proven method to make choices that have broad approval.

Quit making rules to stop the drive of both parties to their extremism. We are trying to save USA from right AND left extremism as the major choices in elections.

Our 2 party system does not work, resulting in government shutdowns and failure to represent the will of the vast number of voters. RCV offers an alternative that voters should have access to.

Ranked choice voting is a key measure to heal this country’s divisions. Do not ban its use.

States run elections and state parties should be able to draft their own rules for nominating presidential electors. This is a state issue not to be dictatef by the DNC.

Please do not take away this option that results in more participation, fewer runoffs, less expense, and candidates who appeal to larger constituencies.

Absurd that the DNC would even consider banning RCV—one of few the tools that can and has (demonstrably) reduced political polarization in our country.

When multiple candidates with similar platforms run, they divide the votes. RCV enables the voters choice to prevail.
