No RCV Ban for Presidential Primaries

In June, the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) added language to the 2028 delegate selection rules that effectively bans state parties from using Ranked Choice Voting in their own presidential nominating processes. Twelve state parties have used ranked choice voting somewhere in that process over the last two cycles, and not one of them was invited to present before the vote.

This isn’t about whether you love RCV. It’s about whether the national party should strip states of a tool that’s working for them  -a tool that more than doubled primary turnout in Wyoming and nearly quadrupled it in Kansas- at the same time that banning RCV sits on the Heritage Foundation’s priority list and inside Project 2025. Democrats should not be doing Republicans’ work for them.

There’s one chance to fix it: a vote of the full DNC membership in Austin this August. The fix is simple: strike the ban language and return the rules to what they’ve always been, with every state deciding for itself. No one would be required to use ranked choice voting; states would simply keep the right to choose.

Here’s how you can help

  1. Contact any DNC members you know and ask them to support removing the ban. Use this link to contact them in two easy steps
  2. Join the National Call on Tuesday, July 28 at 8:30 PM ET / 7:30 PM CT, where state party leaders who’ve actually run these elections share what’s at stake.
  3. Sign the petition below!

More information and details about the proposed change can be found here.

We, the undersigned, urge all of our respective DNC representatives to OPPOSE Rule 14 of the Delegate Selection Plan.

Whether or not our DNC representatives personally support RCV, this is about whether the national party should strip states of a tool that’s working for them.

RCV is one way to surface the candidate most voters want. The fact the DNC is thinking of banning it is one reason so many Dem voters give directly to candidates and not to the DNC.

RCV is dope. Protecting RCV is one way the DNC could beat the allegations of just being “Republican Lite”

Ranked Choice is obviously the superior method for selecting the best candidate overall. I can’t fathom why the DNC would want to stop this without stepping into conspiracy theory territory. The other side of the aisle typically subscribes to such things.

If you claim to be pro-democracy, you cannot support this language in the delegate selection rules that effectively bans ranked choice voting.

Rank choice voting makes total sense for so many reasons. Do NOT proceed to undermine the momentum for this cause with a bylaw as proposed to circumvent rank choice voting.
