TXPC Calls for Open Process for Selecting New TDP Chair

TXPC Admin
November 08, 2024

Today, the long-time Chair of the Texas Democratic Party has resigned. We thank the Chairman for his many years of service and for stepping aside for a new generation of leadership to take the reigns.

An election of a full replacement Chair taking place during the Q1 meeting of the SDEC, which will be in March of 2025.

The Texas Progressive Caucus (TXPC) calls for the Texas Democratic Party (TDP) to hold a fair, transparent, and open campaign to replace the Chair. This position is too important to rush. The State Democratic Executive Committee (SDEC), which will be responsible for electing the new Chair under TDP rules, must be allowed due diligence in reviewing candidates and hearing from the Democrats they were elected to represent.

Texas Democrats deserve the opportunity to provide feedback to their SDEC Members on who they should support. The TXPC supports and encourages grassroots feedback from progressive activists and Democratic voters on this matter. The people deserve to have a say. Candidates for this position deserve the opportunity to share their vision of how to strengthen the TDP and (re)turn Texas blue.

The TXPC will survey its members on who we intend to support for the new TDP Chair. If time allows, we intend to host a debate for the candidates. As a membership-driven organization, we will represent our member’s wishes.

For more information, join our Election Debrief meeting on Saturday, November 9th, 2pm CST via Zoom.

The SDEC election process, including the meeting in which SDEC votes, should be streamed and physically open to the public. I agree with all the above. Having been on the SDEC, I know that many discussions are bifurcated (public and secret). Also, we need to push all rules to be followed strictly or eliminated. Party leaders have had their fingers on the scale ( both state and national) for decades on top ballot candidates, rules and platform. Sorry I missed this afternoon’s meeting. I am so proud of this caucus and grateful to those who have had the spine and gonads to create and sustain it.
