No RCV Ban for Presidential Primaries

In June, the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) added language to the 2028 delegate selection rules that effectively bans state parties from using Ranked Choice Voting in their own presidential nominating processes. Twelve state parties have used ranked choice voting somewhere in that process over the last two cycles, and not one of them was invited to present before the vote.

This isn’t about whether you love RCV. It’s about whether the national party should strip states of a tool that’s working for them  -a tool that more than doubled primary turnout in Wyoming and nearly quadrupled it in Kansas- at the same time that banning RCV sits on the Heritage Foundation’s priority list and inside Project 2025. Democrats should not be doing Republicans’ work for them.

There’s one chance to fix it: a vote of the full DNC membership in Austin this August. The fix is simple: strike the ban language and return the rules to what they’ve always been, with every state deciding for itself. No one would be required to use ranked choice voting; states would simply keep the right to choose.

Here’s how you can help

  1. Contact any DNC members you know and ask them to support removing the ban. Use this link to contact them in two easy steps
  2. Join the National Call on Tuesday, July 28 at 8:30 PM ET / 7:30 PM CT, where state party leaders who’ve actually run these elections share what’s at stake.
  3. Sign the petition below!

More information and details about the proposed change can be found here.

We, the undersigned, urge all of our respective DNC representatives to OPPOSE Rule 14 of the Delegate Selection Plan.

Whether or not our DNC representatives personally support RCV, this is about whether the national party should strip states of a tool that’s working for them.

A more representative democracy is a healthier democracy. Moreover using party rules to supersede state law is wildly inappropriate for any organization that purports to support democracy. Please vote no on this undemocratic amendment to Rule 14.

Rank choice voting is the only way to represent most not just some people.

RCV is by far the most fair and democratic way to make certain that all people’s voices heard in elections. To silence voter’s choices is undemocratic in every sense of the word.

Do not limit choice for the voters. We need candidates truly selected by a majority.

Voters want more than the polarization that currently exists and a ranked ballot system increases voters choice. Anyone who opposed to it has ulterior motives that may be beneficent but are not representative of peoples wishes and are an objective mistake.

I voted early in the Missouri primary in 2020 for Pete Buttigieg, but he dropped out after I already had voted! My vote was essentially wasted. I could not vote in person on election day because I was studying abroad for college. Please allow and endorse ranked-choice voting in the primaries so all of our voices count, even if our candidates drop out!

Quit making rules to stop the drive of both parties to their extremism. We are trying to save USA from right AND left extremism as the major choices in elections.

Our 2 party system does not work, resulting in government shutdowns and failure to represent the will of the vast number of voters. RCV offers an alternative that voters should have access to.
